Domaine de la Baume: After Week
Updated: Mar 1, 2019
The end of the week is always a pleasant moment and nothing beats celebrating the start of the weekend with an After Week evening at the Domaine de la Baume. La Baume is part of the Grand Chais de France group which owns a dozen estates and is present commercially all around the world. They are best known for their wine J.P. Chenet, which is the most widely distributed French brand in the world.
Domaine de la Baume is situated in near Pézenas, just along the river La Baume, hence the name of the domaine. During the spring and summer season, they organise these soirees on the first Friday of every month. They are the perfect opportunity to have a great time and discover the wines of the property. An increasing number of estates are starting to embrace these events as they are a great way of developing oenotourism.
The summer air and singing cicadas were the perfect backdrop for this Friday evening. The domaine offered a selection of cuvées at their main stand where you could buy a bottle of wine for 15€ or just a glass for 4€. In addition, there were 3 local producers that had their own stands offering a range of products from seafood delights to cheese platters to a selection of meats. To top it all off the band No Limit were there to help kick off this special evening.
We started out with a tasting of Domaine de la Baume's Sauvignon Blanc, a delicious take on this varietal native to the Loire valley. Contrary to its native region, the south of France climate made for a very zesty wine, refreshingly crisp. These citrus aromas of lime and grapefruit were accompanied on the palate with hints of verbena.
The wine paired perfectly with half a dozen oysters and a smoked salmon platter we had bought at la poissonnerie la Perle du Sud's stand. The oysters really brought out the minerality in the Sauvignon Blanc. I'll definitely keep this pairing in mind when planning my next apéritif.
To finish off our meal we decided to go with a cheese platter from la Fromagerie. The different types of cheeses were perfect with the freshly baked bread and cherry jam. I think it's safe to say that I will be attending next month's edition of the After Week soirée at La Baume.
